"The Crossing - Part 1b, Gun Assault" November 1, 2002 (my 34th birthday, actually)

*** 1b: This map is a 'smaller-outdoor' map. ROCKETS and SNIPER RIFLES are TOO MUCH and are NOT needed. ***
Trust me, you'll enjoy it more WITHOUT THEM! Currently setup as an DM map with the OBJECTIVE version coming soon!

This map is small but should provide for some fast and furious fun. It is the second of four maps in a Single-Player campaign that I am working on.

This is the setting for the Single-Player versions:

Several weeks of bad weather have all but grounded Allied aircover and bombing missions. In this time, the German High Command has been carefully organizing a strike force in and around a small French town. The force consists of regular Wehrmacht troops supplimented by Grenadiers and a number of medium and heavy tanks plus a variety of artillery support.

The Allied progress eastward has been stretched thin in the very sector where the Germans are now concentrating this new assault. French informants have managed to pass word to the Allied command in the area with rough details of what the Germans are up to, and how many troops they have. The Allied command, seeing no break in the weather for several more days, has decided that the only hope of stopping the impending German assault is to strike first...outnumbered or not.

Your role is to move eastward, cross a small river, and secure the only bridge for miles around. It is the only means of moving armor and support vehicles over this river. After securing the bridge you and your team will progress through the forest beyond the bridge. You need to find and eliminate some nasty 88mm cannon and 81mm mortars that have been periodically pounding the Allied postions in the sector. For the pre-emptive strike to move quickly, this artillery needs to be 'cleaned-up'. The Allied command has decided on a small strike force to do the job. The Germans will expect Allied patrols to probe their lines from time to time and the small force won't alert the Germans like an entire division rushing their bridge.

If you're lucky, another strike team will meet up with you just as you are ready to take out the guns. Remember, the Germans have had a lot of time to secure and prepare their defences. Once this obstacle is clear, the Allied assault can move forward to attack the town.

1c: Follow up to 1b with the team or their remaining men making a larger scale assault on the town outskirts. For a OBJ map, I plan three objectives.... 1) destroy artillery spotter radio in church bell tower; 2) find the local troop manifest; 3) disable the Pazer guarding the main gate into town. Might be a cool, although large MP map.
